Catalina Island is a beautiful natural laboratory. Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) is an outdoor science school, providing an exciting outdoor education experience for 4th through 12th grade students from public and private schools. Our program is offered at three locations on Catalina Island – operated by the nonprofit corporation, Guided Discoveries – including Toyon Bay, Fox Landing, and Cherry Cove. During our three- and five-day programs, students and teachers enjoy a variety of experiential labs and field activities in Marine Science and Island Ecology. CIMI is a STEM-based program and a Subsidiary of Guided Discoveries, a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit corporation.




Toyon Bay
Toyon Bay is an ideal site for an educational camp and outdoor adventure experience. Located two-and-a-half miles by water from the city of Avalon, it was originally built in 1929 as a private boarding school and briefly used as a training facility for the OSS.
Toyon Bay campus features state-of-the-art science labs, classrooms, aquariums, and recreational facilities for fascinating marine science, as well as traditional activities including oceanography, island ecology, ocean kayaking, climbing wall, and more.

Cherry Cove
CIMI at Cherry Cove boasts open-air laboratories, classrooms, aquariums, display areas and recreational facilities that foster a once-in-a-lifetime educational camp experience. Built in the 1920’s as a private camp facility, CIMI at Cherry Cove is just over a mile from from the town of Two Harbors.
At Cherry Cove, students learn about plankton, fish, algae, and sharks in our experiential labs and field activities, as well as enjoy traditional camp experiences such as campfires, hiking, and ocean kayaking.
Fox Landing
Fox Landing provides a unique blend of recreational facilities with state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, aquariums, and display areas; Students participate in marine science labs and field activities to explore marine life, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, high ropes, evening campfires, and more.
Found just five miles from the city of Avalon, CIMI at Fox Landing is an ideal site for outdoor education. Originally built in the 1920’s as a YMCA camp facility, Fox Landing boasts an ideal combination of attributes for the educational camp experience.
